The German basketball players are on a winning streak in Paris. Dirk Nowitzki is there as a lucky charm.
The German basketball players are among the favorites at the Olympic Games in Paris – and in the 3×3 version they are already among the winners. No wonder, after all they have a very special lucky charm: at the sensational gold coup of the German 3×3 basketball women on Monday evening (5 August), basketball legend Dirk Nowitzki (46) was in the audience and posed with the players afterwards. And this Wednesday morning (6 July) the former NBA player crossed his fingers for the men’s basketball team – also successfully.
DBB men reach Olympic semifinals
In the quarterfinals between the German national team led by flag bearer Dennis Schröder (30) and the Greeks with superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo (29), Nowitzki sat courtside in the Bercy Arena in Paris. The team of national coach Gordon Herbert (65) won 76:63 and is now one win away from the medal in the semifinals. Nowitzki was seen celebrating after the victory with his fists raised in the air.
For the German national team, it is the first Olympic semi-final in its history. In the round of the last four, the DBB team will face the winner of the France-Canada match on Thursday (8 August). It could be the third medal in three years after bronze at the home European Championships in 2022 and gold at the World Championships in 2023. The men’s final will take place on Saturday evening (10 August) at 9:30 p.m., the bronze medal match in the morning at 11:00 a.m.
Basketball players fight against France in the quarterfinals
The German basketball team also still has a chance of winning an Olympic medal: on Thursday (August 7th) the team will face the hosts from France in the quarterfinals. The women’s gold medal match is one of the last competitions of the Olympic Games – on Sunday afternoon (August 11th) at 3:30 p.m.
