Jennifer Garner prepared for “Deadpool & Wolverine” with an intensive workout plan. “I was fit, but not Marvel-fit.”
Jennifer Garner (52) has not only put in an acting performance but also a remarkable athletic performance for her appearance in the current box office hit “Deadpool & Wolverine” (2024). In preparation for her role as antiheroine Elektra, the mother of three undertook a tough workout. Her sports sessions have already garnered a million likes. “I was fit, but not Marvel-fit,” she revealed about the training.
“Superhero Summer”
The compilation shows her jogging, swimming and boxing. She said she worked out boxing three times a week during her “superhero summer”. Garner sometimes swapped her dumbbells for pumpkins for her workouts. She also practiced using the sais, the weapons of her film character. She said she “twirled sais in the garden” with her trainers and laughed about her “sore old bodies”.
“Apart from trying to convince my children’s preschool friends that I’m secretly a ninja, I hadn’t picked up an Elektra sais since 2004,” she said of the exercise. The training paid off: at the end of the video, she skillfully twirls the sais around in her costume. She last fought with the Asian weapon almost 20 years ago in the film “Elektra” (2005).
“Really like a dream”
Not only did she have fun during the workouts despite the exertion, she also enjoyed filming the fight scene. Acting with her co-stars was “really like a dream”. “I’m proud of my friends and grateful that I was able to be up there with them. A thank you is not enough,” she raved about her time on set.
Director Shawn Levy (56) and lead actor Ryan Reynolds (47) had the idea of including Elektra in the blockbuster. “We were on the set of ‘The Adam Project’ and they gave each other that look that can convey an idea, 20 pages of dialogue or nuclear codes,” she said, describing the chemistry between the two. There is a “crazy artistic kismet” between them.
In addition to his role as Deadpool, Reynolds also worked on the action film as a producer and screenwriter. After just under two weeks, the Marvel superhero film grossed 824 million dollars, the equivalent of around 755 million euros, worldwide.
