Four years after the death of Chadwick Boseman, another star of the “Black Panther” films has passed away: Connie Chiume is dead.
South African actress Connie Chiume has died at the age of 72. Chiume’s relatives have announced the sad news to the star. A short statement reads: “The Chiume family regrets to announce that internationally acclaimed and award-winning actress Connie Chiume has died.” She died on August 6th in Garden City Hospital in Johannesburg. The article does not yet say anything about the circumstances of her death. However, the family will “communicate further details” at the appropriate time.
Chiume celebrated her greatest successes with her role in the two “Black Panther” films. In the first film of the film series, released in 2018, she played one of the tribal elders. Four years later, in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”, she slipped into the role again and rose to become the successor to Forest Whitaker’s (63) character Zuri as an important representative of the fictional Wakanda.
Without preparation for the “Black Panther” casting
She spoke about her unusual casting for the Marvel blockbuster around two years ago: “I went to an audition without knowing what I was auditioning for. I was given a scene to do and I could see that this person was an African woman addressing the nation. I wore my African regalia, I learned my lines. I did my best.” At the time, she never dreamed that “Black Panther” would be a huge box office success.
Chiume found her calling as an actress late in life. The star, who was born in Welkom in 1952, initially worked as a teacher. In her mid-20s, she finally moved to Greece to further her acting career. After joining the cast of the musical “Sola Sola”, she gradually became famous in her home country. From the late 1980s onwards, she appeared in numerous TV films and series, including the drama series “Gomora”. She also appeared in Beyoncé Knowles’ (42) musical “Black Is King”.
Back in 2020, Wakanda had to say goodbye to its king Chadwick Boseman. The actor who played the title character died of cancer at the age of just 43.
