US star Liza Minnelli: She prefers to write her memoirs herself

US artist Liza Minnelli is an icon of the entertainment industry. She will reveal what lies behind her fame in her memoirs.

The US publisher Grand Central Publishing has announced the acquisition of the memoirs of showbiz icon Liza Minnelli (78). The publisher also announced that the book is expected to be published in spring 2026 as a printed hardcover, e-book and audio edition. Minnelli will not write the book all by herself; her long-time friend and business partner Michael Feinstein (67) will be supporting her as a contributor.

The 78-year-old herself spoke up. In the caption she wrote: “Today I open my heart and lungs to tell a story that has never been told. Mine. I reveal my words and share truths.”

Liza Minnelli: “It’s my own story”

A statement from the actress is included in the publisher’s announcement and reveals the many reasons that led Minnelli to start the project. “Tell me when I’m no longer here” was her original philosophy and she was of the opinion that a book about her life should only be published after her death.

But several events contributed to her change of mind: “A sabotaged performance at the Oscars in front of billions of people, a movie with twisted half-truths, a recent miniseries that just didn’t get it right.” Finally, the Broadway star lost her temper. In the statement, Minnelli writes: “One night at dinner, I decided that it was my own damn story. I’m going to share it with you because you’ve given me so much love.”

What will it be about?

The memoir promises to be a personal look into her career, following Minnelli on her eventful journey through all of her ups and downs: from her childhood in the spotlight to her major successes, her turbulent marriages and her struggles with substance abuse. The book aims to reveal all of the experiences that have made her one of the most captivating artists in entertainment history.

Who is Liza Minnelli?

As the daughter of acting legend and singer Judy Garland (1922-1969) and film director Vincente Minnelli (1903-1986), Liza Minnelli grew up in the spotlight.

At just 19 years old, she made Broadway history when she became the youngest woman ever to win a Tony Award for her role in “Flora the Red Menace.” She won an Oscar for Best Actress for her role in “Cabaret” (1972). Minnelli also shone on television with her program “Liza with a Z” – she received an Emmy for it in 1973. Many other prestigious honors followed, including the Grammy Legend Award in 1989.

This makes Liza Minnelli a member of the small group of “EGOT” award winners, i.e. artists who have won all four of the most important awards in the entertainment industry – Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony.

“Lady peaceful, Lady happy”

In the publisher’s statement, Minnelli writes that she has finally arrived and describes herself as a “lady peaceful, lady happy” – a reference to her song “Maybe This Time” (1978). She assures her fans: “Until this book comes out, you should know that I am laughing, safe, surrounded by loved ones, and excited about what lies around the next bend in life.”
