Right in the center of the Province of Buenos Aires, Tapalqué is the capital of the homonymous district and is 273 km from the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires.

The name “Tapalqué” (actually it would be “Tapalquén”) means in the Araucanian/Mapuche language “water with reeds” or “totoral”, in reference to the reeds that abound on the banks of the stream in question. It was formerly an area of ​​land with large marshes that was located in the area of ​​”El Perdido”, today Olavarría.

On December 25, 1839, Governor Juan Manuel de Rosas, through decree 1430, reorganized the civil government of the territories south of the Salado River into 14 sections or parties. Among them, the Tapalqué Party was created, seat of garrisons and military forts. On March 2, 1855, Governor Pastor Obligado ordered by decree, at the request of the residents, the transfer from the small population center to the ends of the Tapalqué stream (present-day Olavarría).
