Michael Schanze (77) and Uschi Köhl had been an inseparable couple for around ten years, but they had met long before that. Before the spark between the two of them struck up a relationship, Uschi worked for three decades as a costume designer, responsible for dressing the cult presenter for his TV appearances. The fact that his partner died of a brain hemorrhage just shortly after her 70th birthday on July 29, 2024, is hard for Schanze to deal with. After all, everything was just perfect with this woman.
In the new edition of the magazine “Bunte”, the entertainer spoke for the first time in more detail about his life after the stroke of fate. In the interview, he still appears to be deeply shaken and says: “It’s a low blow, I haven’t come to my senses yet.”
“Uschi was my support, my harbor”
He can’t get his head around the fact that she had to go before him. “I was the one with all the illnesses, not Uschi,” said Schanze, who lives with a knee prosthesis after a skiing accident in 2003 and survived a bilateral pulmonary embolism in 2019. “Uschi was always by my side,” said the presenter. “She was the spearhead of the normal life that I longed for again. Uschi was my support, my haven.”
A death out of the blue
He reports on Uschi’s tragic death in the interview: “Uschi died of a brain hemorrhage, there is no cure for that. I found her motionless in our winter garden. The emergency doctor told me that Uschi had no chance. Even if I had been standing next to her and the doctor too.” There had been no warning signs beforehand, the death of his partner had struck him “like a bolt of lightning”.
In the time that followed, his family took exemplary care of him, with his three sons and his brother Christian constantly at his side. “It’s touching how my family functions during this difficult time,” said Schanze. “My whole house is full. I’m not alone. That feels so good.”
“Her joy of life will remain with many”
Last week he was able to say goodbye to his dead partner in peace and quiet. “I was able to touch her one last time,” he recalls of that moment. “All the wonderful experiences flashed before my eyes. He takes some comfort in the fact that he celebrated Uschi’s 70th birthday in April with many friends. “Her joy of life will stay with many,” says Michael Schanze, “and especially with me.”
