Luxury flatbread: Pizza for 65 euros – trouble for Flavio Briatore

The father of Heidi Klum’s daughter Leni runs several restaurants. The latest project is in Naples – and the pizza chefs there are anything but enthusiastic.

Former Formula 1 manager Flavio Briatore has gotten himself into a lot of trouble with pizza prices of up to 65 euros in his newest restaurant in Naples. The pizza makers’ association in the southern Italian city accuses the 74-year-old of betraying the tradition of the entire trade.

The former team boss of the Formula 1 racing teams Benetton and Renault wants to open another branch of his pizzeria chain “Crazy Pizza” on the waterfront in Naples after the summer break. The menu also includes a 65-euro pizza topped with the Spanish Pata Negra ham.

Association: “A pizza is a food for the people”

The other prices are also quite high: the classic Margherita pizza, for example, is said to cost 17 euros. By comparison, elsewhere in the pizza capital of Naples, the Margherita topped with tomatoes, mozzarella and basil is available for four euros. The price usually does not exceed nine euros.

The local association of pizza makers explained: “This is not in keeping with our tradition. Pizza is a dish for the people. It must not be too expensive.” Briatore justified himself: “I am convinced that the price for a good pizza in a luxury restaurant with qualified staff, DJs and entertainment is absolutely reasonable.”

The former sports manager, who has a now grown-up daughter named Leni with Heidi Klum, already owns several luxury pizzerias in cities such as London, Monte Carlo and Saint-Tropez.
