What are the relaxed functions?
The so-called “relaxed functions” in cinemas are film screenings that present a series of adaptations (the sound and light stimuli are softened, there is freedom of movement in the room, information resources are offered for anticipation and a “sensory regulation” area is made available), which allow neurodivergent peoplesuch as autistic people and people with sensory hypersensitivity, can have a pleasant experience of the show.
The Bachelor of Psychology (MN. 40967) Matias Cadaveirawho specializes in neurodiversity and advises Disney on relaxed functions, explains that these proposals “allow people with different needs to enjoy a trip to the cinema without worrying about the environment being overwhelming.” This is a way of guaranteeing the right of all people to enjoy entertainment proposals.
For many neurodivergent people, relaxed screenings represent a unique opportunity to enjoy the magic of cinema. Neki Tavosnanska, a mother of two children, one of whom has non-verbal autism, says that thanks to these adapted shows, her son was able to go to the cinema for the first time. “It was a beautiful experience, especially because he didn’t have to sit down all the time,” she adds, and that’s why she started “taking him to almost all the relaxed screenings.”
In addition, expert Matías Cadaveira shared 5 recommendations to keep in mind when attending a relaxed movie screening with neurodivergent people.
- Clear communication: Talk to the person about what to expect during the performance. Explain any accommodations that were made and answer any questions.
- Anticipation: Share pictograms and other visual resources to anticipate what is coming. This will help manage emotions such as anxiety.
- Bring comforting objects: Allow comforting items, such as toys, squishies, blankets, noise-cancelling headphones, or glasses, to help the person feel comfortable and at ease.
- Arrive early: It can help you avoid crowds and find your seats with ease.
- Respect their needs: Each person is unique, so it is important to respect their support requirements before, during and after the performance.
