Cate Blanchett says “nobody got paid anything” for “The Lord of the Rings”

The actress Cate Blanchett starred in the box office hit The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ringbut according to her, the money raised from that success never reached the cast.

During an appearance on “Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen,” Blanchett played a game called “Plead the Fifth” where she was asked about the movie that earned her the most money.

“It’s probably ‘The Lord of the Rings,'” Cohen suggested.

“Are you kidding me?” Blanchett said as Cohen expressed surprise. “No. Nobody got paid anything to make that movie.”.

Asked by Cohen if she “got a cut of the money,” referring to the practice of big stars getting a percentage of ticket sales, Blanchett said no.

“That movie was long before all that,” he said. “No, nothing.”

Blanchett said she made the 2001 film for the chance to work with Peter Jackson, who directed the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy.

The actress is not the only cast member to mention the limited amount of her compensation. In a 2019 interview on The Howard Stern Show, Orlando Bloom, who played the elf Legolas, revealed that he was paid just $175,000 for his work.
