Netflix, Prime, Disney & Co: Engelke, Emily, Gods: This is what the streaming autumn brings

Streaming highlights for the coming months include: Jeff Goldblum as Zeus, new seasons of “Emily in Paris” and “Squid Game” and a series with Anke Engelke and Bastian Pastewka.

It’s August, the so-called TV autumn or streaming autumn is gradually beginning. Among other things, the first German-language series from Apple TV+ will premiere in the coming weeks.

The streaming service (“Ted Lasso”), founded at the end of 2019, competes as a video-on-demand service with providers such as Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video.

The competitors had their German series premieres in 2017 (“Dark” on Netflix, “You Are Wanted” on Prime) and 2023 (“Sam – Ein Sachse” on Disney+).

Even though the new season of the cult series “The White Lotus” is not due to be released until 2025, there is still a lot to see until the end of the year.

Among other things, the current animation hit “Inside Out 2” is also likely to be included in the Disney+ program.

It’s high time for a – of course incomplete – selection of upcoming events on the major streaming services. Here we go:

“The Bear” – Season 3

It has been running on the American streaming service Hulu since the end of June, and in this country the third season of the award-winning series “The Bear” with Jeremy Allen White as chef Carmy will be released on August 14th on Disney+.

“Perfectly missed” with Engelke and Pastewka

Many people can hardly believe that Anke Engelke and Bastian Pastewka have never made a fictional series together – but it’s true. “Perfekt Missed” starts on Prime Video on August 15th. It’s about two singles who live in the same city but need to meet each other to perhaps become the perfect couple.

“Emily in Paris” – Season 4

Ah, Paris, the city of love. The confusing private and business life of American Emily (Lily Collins), who is looking for happiness in the French capital, continues. The first half of the fourth season will be released on Netflix on August 15th and the second (episodes 6 to 10) on September 12th. Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu is also back in the kitsch and cliché-laden hit series as boss Sylvie Grateau. Superb!

“Maxima” – RTL+

The series is considered the Dutch answer to the Netflix hit “The Crown” about Elizabeth II, the Queen. The six-part series “Máxima” (from August 17th on RTL+) is about Máxima Zorreguieta (Delfina Chaves) from Argentina and her love story with the current King Willem-Alexander (Martijn Lakemeier), which is full of obstacles. Sebastian Koch plays Claus von Amsberg, the husband of Queen Beatrix.

“Kaos” with Jeff Goldblum

This is what the series universe was missing and actually seems only logical: Greek mythology as a kind of US soap. On August 29th, the series “Kaos” starts on Netflix with the incomparable Jeff Goldblum. He plays the cruel father of the gods Zeus, who is about to be deposed – without knowing it. The project comes from the authors of “The End of the F***ing World” and the producers of the series “Chernobyl”.

“The Rings of Power” – Season 2

The “Lord of the Rings” prequel was a hit for Prime Video in 2022. The first season had more than 100 million views and led to many new subscriptions. The second season, which airs on August 29, focuses on JRR Tolkien’s villain Sauron (Charlie Vickers) – and the darkening of the Second Age of Middle Earth.

“The Upir” – Vampire comedy with Yardım and Schamoni

Burger joint owner Eddie (Fahri Yardım) is bitten by vampire Igor (Rocko Schamoni) in the basement of a house in Berlin during a house tour. “From this moment on, Eddie’s transformation from human to bloodsucker begins. He can only prevent this metamorphosis by serving Igor unconditionally as Upir,” Joyn explains his eight-part series, which starts on September 18th.

“The Penguin” with Colin Farrell

The spin-off series “The Penguin” with Colin Farrell in the lead role continues the crime saga “The Batman” (2022) by filmmaker Matt Reeves. The eight-part series, developed by showrunner Lauren LeFranc, revolves around villain Oz Cobb (aka “The Penguin”). It starts on September 20th with one episode per week on Sky and the streaming service Wow.

“Where’s Wanda?” with Makatsch and Stein

Apple TV+’s first German-language series will start on October 2nd with two episodes. The so-called dark comedy with Heike Makatsch and Axel Stein revolves around a couple who are desperately searching for their daughter Wanda, who disappeared without a trace months ago. A new episode of the eight episodes will be released every Wednesday until November 13th.

“Heartstopper” – Season 3

The queer love story with the main actors Kit Connor and Joe Locke continues on October 3rd. In addition to all the romance in the British coming-of-age series, things also got serious at the end of the second “Heartstopper” season. Season three is likely to focus a lot on mental health, for example on the eating disorder of Locke’s character Charlie.

“Disclaimer” with Blanchett and Kline

The seven-part psychological thriller series “Disclaimer” on AppleTV+ (two episodes on October 11th, then one every Friday until November 15th) has a top cast with stars such as Cate Blanchett, Kevin Kline, Sacha Baron Cohen and Lesley Manville. Oscar winner Alfonso Cuarón (“Gravity”, “Roma”) tells – based on the bestseller “Deadline” by Renée Knight – the story of a journalist who receives a novel from a stranger that threatens to reveal dark secrets.

“Spellbound” – animation fun

The Netflix film “Spellbound” comes from the creative minds behind “Toy Story” and the co-director of “Shrek”. A young princess sets out to save her kingdom after her parents are mysteriously turned into monsters.

“Senna”

The Brazilian Formula 1 icon Ayrton Senna is being memorialized on Netflix. The legendary driver had a fatal accident in Imola in 1994. The six-part mini-series “Senna” starts on November 29th. “The fictional production tells the story of Senna’s impressive and tragic life. The series about the three-time world champion begins with his move to England, where he joins Formula Ford, and ends with his tragic accident…” The main role is played by Brazilian star Gabriel Leone.

“Squid Game” – Season 2

The bloody series “Squid Game” about deadly competitions for high prize money was the surprise hit in the moving image market in 2021 and is still the most successful Netflix series ever – a hype. Now it continues with season two on Christmas (December 26th). The series clearly captures a global zeitgeist, as it revolves around growing inequality, discrimination against social minorities and extreme pressure to perform.
