Woodstock co-organizer Michael Lang died at the age of 77

Spokesman Michael Pagnotta confirmed the death of the music promoter, according to Billboard magazine. Lang was 77 years old.

Between August 15 and 18, 1969, about 400,000 people came to Bethel, New York State, for the Original Woodstock Festival. It is still considered the high point of the hippie movement in the United States.

Lang, who came from Brooklyn in New York, had previously hosted a number of concerts and smaller festivals. Together with his friend Artie Kornfeld and the investors Joel Rosenman and John Roberts, all in their early 20s, he organized the three-day open-air festival in 1969 on a large farm meadow in the US state of New York with the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Joe Cocker , The Grateful Dead and The Who.

Lang, who later worked as a music manager, was planning a new edition of the festival in 2019 for the 50th anniversary, about 200 kilometers from the original location. But a few weeks before the date, the event was canceled after investors and artists dropped out.
