?Banksy revealed the key to the mystery? In an apparent conclusion to nine days of intriguing animal artwork in London, the street artist on Tuesday unveiled graffiti at the capital’s zoo depicting a gorilla freeing other captive animals.
The famous graffiti artist, whose identity is unknown, generated multiple speculations about his intentions by making his posts known daily since August 5 Animal pictures on different walls in London.
In general, his works tend to be spaced out over several months.
Banksy claimed his work on Instagram as usual: a gorilla lifting a painted canvas over a metal fence at the entrance to London Zoo.
From there emerge birds and a seal that seem to escape from the zoo, which is home to more than 10,000 animals, while pairs of eyes glow in the dark.
“My husband thinks he’s freeing the animals,” said Sharmela Darne, a 50-year-old doctor visiting the zoo from north-east England, as she looked at the “slightly uncertain” eyes beneath the tarpaulin.
“Maybe it’s about freedom and uncertainty in the face of freedom,” she suggested when questioned by AFP.
Banksy and a series of animals in London
This work seems to explain the origin of the animals in the previous ones. According to BBC, it concludes the series of animals that began with the appearance of a goat on a facade.
A painted rhino appeared to climb over an abandoned car on a vacant lot on Monday.
These appearances have given rise to multiple theories about the artist’s message, which is committed to causes such as the defence of refugees or the fate of the Palestinians.
For the Sunday newspaper The Observer, the aim was to lift public spirits at a time when the news is bleak.
Some of Banksy’s works have sold at auction for millions of dollars, while others have been stolen, dismantled or vandalized.
London Zoo is vowing to protect the one that was found on its land in a manner yet to be determined, said one of its officials, Karl Penman.
For him, it could be the last of the animals. “Who knows? If it is the end, then what a beautiful ending!” he says.
