Nick Cave: Self-reflection after the loss of his sons

Nick Cave has had a difficult time with the death of his two sons. Now the singer explains how he reflected on the loss.

Singer Nick Cave (66) has experienced not only grief but also a change of perspective with the death of his sons Arthur (2000-2015) and Jethro (1991-2022). He spoke of turning away from his “shameful kind of self-love” after this loss. He now puts his family above his role as a musician. The Australian has already lost two of his four children in his life.

“I am a father, a husband, a grandfather”

Before the tragic events, Cave admired his own genius and was focused on himself. As he described it, the sudden deaths showed him “the folly” of his arrogance. “I’m a father, a husband, a grandfather and a kind of man of the world. These things are much more important to me than the concept of being an artist,” explained the “Into My Arms” singer. His career as a musician and author is still important to him, but he has said goodbye to the “idea that art surpasses everything.”

A while after the loss of his 15-year-old son Arthur, Cave felt drawn to religion. The songwriter found the religious life “very helpful”. In the conversation, he also revealed that he was “forever in awe” of how his wife Susie Cave (57) returned to life after the stroke of fate. After Arthur’s death, the fashion designer was “bedridden, in a darkened room, in her own grave”. She symbolically climbed out of it and started working again. Cave described her as “an enormous source of inspiration”.

Singer became grandfather for the first time

In May, Cave shared a happy event on his website “Red Hand Files”: His son Luke (33) and his wife Sasha made him a grandfather with the birth of their son Roman. In addition to Luke, Nick Cave is the father of another son, Earl (24). He had him and his deceased twin brother Arthur with his wife Susie Cave. Luke Cave, on the other hand, comes from Cave’s previous marriage to the Brazilian Viviane Carneiro.

The frontman of the band Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds lost his son Arthur in 2015 when he fell off a cliff. Seven years later, he mourned the death of Jethro Cave. The cause of death of the 31-year-old, who worked as a model and actor, is unknown.
