The 93-minute film offers a great period story so we can immerse ourselves in Mexico at the beginning of the 20th century. This production also encourages us to think about how much society has changed, the road that remains to be travelled and opens debates among viewers about respect.

One of the main characters, Emiliano Zurita, says: “I think the people who should watch this film the most are the people who think they won’t be comfortable watching it.” The actor argues that this type of viewer should watch the film so that they can ask themselves where their discomfort comes from and come to their own judgment of whether it is wrong or not.
What is The Dance of the 41, a movie on Netflix, about?
Its history goes back to the dance of the 41. It was a private meeting that took place in Mexico City during the regime of Porfirio Díaz. There 42 men gathered at a dance, where most of them were dressed as women. The police broke into the party and took all of them away. Many of them had high positions in the country’s business and politics, but the only one who was released and whose information was hidden was Ignacio de la Torre y Mier, the husband of the Mexican dictator’s daughter.
The film focuses on the life of Ignacio, who was married to Amanda Días and this allowed him to enter a select circle of power. The reality was that he despised his long-suffering wife and maintained a double life with Evaristo Rivas. All of this was perfectly recounted in the film. In it It details both the clandestinity of homosexuality, the discrimination of society and machismo of the same because Amanda could only remain submissive to patriarchal power.
