Juliane Köhler became famous with films such as “Nowhere in Africa” and “Downfall”. But her fame is not exactly what she likes about her job.
Actress Juliane Köhler (“Nowhere in Africa”) doesn’t like being in the spotlight outside of her roles. “Celebrities, publicity and the red carpet are not what drives me in my job,” she told the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung” (NOZ). Instead, content is her motivation, said the 59-year-old.
“If I like a subject, if I find the role interesting, I enjoy it,” said the actress from Göttingen. “The other thing is particularly exhausting for me – I’ve never been able to celebrate myself as much as some of my colleagues like to do. That’s probably because I’m such a shy guy. I don’t want to portray myself as Juliane, but as the character I’m playing. Then I’m no longer shy. When I can portray a character, I’m totally confident. But red carpets are just really exhausting, it’s a burden for me.”

According to Köhler, her shyness was also the reason why she was rejected by nine acting schools in Germany before she completed her acting training in New York.
Köhler will soon be seen in Aaron Arens’ film “Sonnenplätze” (opens in cinemas on August 22). The film tells the story of a family that unexpectedly comes together in their holiday home on Lanzarote. “Beautiful memories meet bizarre family anecdotes, old love meets new circumstances – and conflicts that have been simmering for a long time slowly but surely begin to escalate,” said the announcement for the film.
