Marina Marx has established herself in the German pop scene – and has worked almost nonstop for years.
The title of pop singer Marina Marx’s (33) second album inevitably brings to mind the popular party game spin the bottle: “Truth or Dare” is the name of the work, which will be released on August 16. In an interview with the news agency spot on news, the Baden-Württemberg native reveals why she preferred to choose dare when playing spin the bottle in her youth, what is important to her today and where she will spend her first real vacation after eleven years.
How did the album title come about?
Marina Marx: When my songwriting team from Hamburg created the song “Truth or Dare”, I knew right away that I wanted to name my album that too. These three words immediately conjure up a picture – cheeky, short and snappy.
If you were to play Truth or Dare again today, what would you choose and why?
Marx: We’re talking about spin the bottle here, I always chose the dare because I always hoped to be able to make out. Otherwise I’m always for the truth, there’s nothing worse than being lied to!
And who would you most like to play it with?
Marx: Nowadays I prefer just being with my girls and a bottle of wine. In the past, our school cliques and a mixed bunch were my number one choice.
What can your fans expect from your new album?
Marx: A mix of pop, rock and country. My new Marina Marx sound, so to speak. It goes back to my roots. I grew up with country music and later learned to love rock music. I wanted to implement that on the upcoming album. The songs are very diverse both musically and in terms of content. I think it’s a very exciting and brave album.
Which song on your new album is particularly close to your heart?
Marx: There are two. Firstly, there is the song “Ready or Not” – a country number with a lot of depth in the lyrics. A man who missed the opportunity to propose to the love of his life, the daughter who would rather go out partying with her friends than have a coffee with her daddy. Then there is my punk rock number “Fighter”, a hymn to my girls out there – a daring but very honest number!
You can also hear the Bon Jovi homage “It’s My Life”. Why did you choose this particular song?
Marx: My team and I liked the idea of doing a cover in German and that’s how we came up with the song “It’s my life”. I absolutely love the band’s old songs, but of course we wanted to do the biggest hit and I think we succeeded.
You were on tour with your colleague Kerstin Ott in the winter. What experience do you remember most?
Marx: The moment when I was on stage with Kerstin and we sang “Proud Mary” by Tina Turner together. That was so great, and as a huge Tina fan I am very, very grateful to her for that!
Will there possibly be a repeat?
Marx: Nothing is planned at the moment, but who knows. I would definitely be there. But I’m currently planning my own concert in Laupheim – my hometown, which will take place in January. Then you can finally see Marina on stage with her band again. I’m planning a great show, with my own songs, a few covers, and I’ll unleash the showgirl that’s in me. Stay tuned!
What other events are coming up this year?
Marx: I’m especially looking forward to my album being released and to all the live gigs and TV shows that I still have ahead of me this year. And I’m also looking forward to a week’s holiday at the end of August. I haven’t been away for more than four days since 2013 and I’m really longing for Italy and the sea.
