Cora Schumacher: She speaks for the first time about Ralf’s coming out

Cora Schumacher has spoken publicly for the first time about her feelings after her ex-husband Ralf came out.

It’s been about a month since Ralf Schumacher (49) made his relationship with a man public and celebrated it. The former racing driver received a lot of support from many quarters, and his son David (22) also gave his blessing to his father’s relationship. Only ex-wife Cora Schumacher (47) didn’t say anything for a long time – until now. In a recent interview, she has now spoken about her feelings for the first time.

“I feel compelled to correct my public image,” explains Cora Schumacher in an interview with the magazine “Spiegel”. “Just as Mr Schumacher has the right to come out. Did he even think for a moment about the consequences for me?”

She only found out about the news through the media “like the rest of Germany”. It was not easy for her “that suddenly the whole of Germany was speculating about my inner life and my well-being”, said the 47-year-old through tears. She would have seen an advance warning as “a sign of respect”. It is not clear whether she only found out about the relationship through the media or was surprised by the announcement.

According to “Spiegel”, Ralf Schumacher did not want to comment on the matter. His lawyers said that reporting on family matters violated his privacy. The claim that Cora only found out that Ralf was with his partner Étienne through his public coming out was incorrect.

Contradictory statements

In an emotional interview with “Spiegel”, Cora Schumacher also has positive words for her ex-partner. She is happy for his happiness and is pleased that Ralf has finally found himself and can accept his sexuality, says the 47-year-old. For the future, she can also imagine “that they might find each other again as a patchwork family”. She particularly wishes this for their son.

At the moment, however, she doesn’t know how to deal with the fact that Ralf didn’t talk to her before coming out. “Because a coming out like this always affects those around you, including the ex-wife with whom you had a child,” says Cora Schumacher. “And yes, I wish Ralf had included me or at least told me about it.”

Her main concern now is to maintain her credibility and reputation. She does not want to be accused of “having entered into a supposed sham marriage or having an arrangement.”
