In Colombia, the Duchess of Sussex is campaigning for girls’ voices to be heard, citing her own daughter as an example.
Princess Lilibet (3) is, according to her mother Duchess Meghan, a rather vocal toddler. “I encourage our daughter, who has absolutely found her voice at the age of three, and we are so proud of that,” Meghan said during a visit to Colombia. “I know how it feels not to use your voice when you need to be heard or have something to say.” The 43-year-old has repeatedly reported on immense pressure during her time in the British royal family.
Meghan and her husband Prince Harry (39) visited Colombia for several days at the invitation of Vice President Francia Márquez. Lilibet and her brother Prince Archie (5) were not on the trip.
“I want to make sure that girls feel like their voices are heard and that boys are raised to listen to girls,” Meghan said at a panel discussion in the city of Cali. “The role of men is crucial in this – and my husband is an example of that.” She herself finds inspiration in strong women like her mother Doria Ragland, Meghan said.
Husband Harry called on the young people present to make a difference in their communities. “The path you have chosen will make a difference that will inspire hundreds or even thousands of young people and bring about change,” said the fifth in line to the British throne.
The trip to Colombia was the couple’s second public trip abroad this year; in May they were in Nigeria. Since they gave up their royal duties in 2020, Harry and Meghan have no longer traveled on behalf of the crown or the British government. They have founded several projects, some of them charitable.
