More than 90% of parents said they educate their children on security, according to a survey conducted by CIO Investigaciones for the Verisure Security Observatory.
Every third Sunday in August, Children’s Day is celebrated in Argentina, an occasion to celebrate and enjoy with the little ones. However, between celebrations and joys, a topic arises that not everyone wants to talk about: the fear of parents and the growing insecurity. Recent studies carried out in AMBA by CIO Investigaciones for the Verisure Security Observatory, reveal alarming figures: 77% of parents with children under 17 consider that their locality is more unsafe than a year ago.

In this context, a positive fact emerges: 90% of parents say they educate their children in terms of safety. However, the reality is that children are exposed to numerous dangers and while it is a good first step, it is essential that as a society we become aware of this situation and that all parties involved work together to guarantee their safety and well-being. As for what they teach them, the first thing that comes up is direct contact, generally via cell phone, where parents ask their children to always let them know when they arrive or leave a place and to keep their location updated. Not talking to strangers and moving in groups are other recommendations that most parents pass on to their children.

The same survey revealed that parents are most afraid of a possible violent robbery in public. This is one of the most frequent types of robbery and the one that is most often heard about on social media and in the media. It is important that this serves as motivation to talk about the subject and to transmit to children the safety and prevention measures that they should take to reduce to a minimum the probability of suffering a criminal act without instilling excessive fear in them that could affect their proper development. Robbery in the street without violence and abuse by an adult are other of the main concerns of parents.
With this in mind, Verisure experts share some tips for talking about safety with your children.:
Dialogue: Open spaces of trust so that they can express their fears and doubts, communicate to them the dangers that exist and how to handle them safely. Communicate to them the need to be cautious without instilling excessive fear.
Educate in prevention: Teach them to identify risky situations and ask for help when they need it.
Set clear boundaries: Define safe times and places to move around alone, and be clear about which times and areas are best to avoid.
Demand from the authorities: It is essential that governments take concrete measures and react to the growing insecurity, to ensure the safety of all citizens, especially the most vulnerable.
“Insecurity is an issue that concerns everyone. 71% of those surveyed indicated that it was their main concern, even surpassing inflation, a figure that is even higher if we talk about parents with young children. Gathering this information allows us to bring these issues to the fore and adjust our proposals by focusing on what really concerns Argentines,” said Carlos Beltrán Rubinos, director of operations at Verisure Argentina.
