After her breast cancer diagnosis, Muriel Baumeister is back in front of the camera. She is determined to close the chapter of her illness.
In April 2023, Muriel Baumeister (52) made it public that she had been battling breast cancer for a year. Today, more than two years after her diagnosis, the actress is not yet officially cured, but is cancer-free and is back in front of the camera. She would like to leave the disease behind her completely, as she explains in an interview with the magazine “Bunte”. “I would like to see this whole period of illness as if it were in a bracket. And this bracket is now closed. I just don’t want to have it present all the time.”
But it has nothing to do with repression or fear: “I would just like to close this chapter and put it behind me. In my head I think: I’ve done every therapy there is and – hurray! – I finally have hair again! So I am healthy after all!”
Too hasty? Because Baumeister admits to having neglected the aftercare. “I know I’m not exactly a model cancer patient. When I still hadn’t had the aftercare after four, almost five months, my treating professor called me and gave me a good telling off and made me feel like I was quartered for my negligent behavior,” explains the 52-year-old. Her family also made it clear to her how important the aftercare was. She now goes for regular examinations again.
“I feel good, I’m back”
She feels “just really good again”. Nevertheless, there are days when she is exhausted. “But then the question remains: is the strain due to cancer – or due to work?” Baumeister is currently in front of the camera five days a week for the Sat.1 series “Die Spreewaldklinik”. It is her first big job after her illness. “Sometimes I have to pinch myself to see if all this is really happening,” she admits. “That the production actually chose me – an alcoholic with cancer.” She hopes the industry sees this as a signal: “I feel good, I’m back and I want to really attack again and film all sorts of different things.”
Muriel Baumeister wrote in 2019 in her biography “Falling down is no shame, only staying down”. In October, the 52-year-old will celebrate her seven-year anniversary of abstinence. “It’s a really good feeling,” Baumeister told “Bunte”.
“I’m happy with how it is”
So health-wise, things are looking up, career-wise, and privately? Muriel Baumeister is happy as a single. “I’m actually not looking for a man. Not even a woman. I’m happy the way things are,” says the Austrian-born woman. “I’m just single and happy with that. Period.” She has had “three great loves in life.”
Baumeister was married three times: from her marriage to actor Rainer Strecker (58) she had a son born in 1993. In 2006 a daughter was born, whose father is the actor Pierre Besson (57). In 2014 Baumeister became the mother of another daughter.
