Heinz Hoenig should leave the intensive care unit and come home. That is the current goal of his wife and the medical team.
Actor Heinz Hoenig (72) has been in the intensive care unit of a Berlin clinic since May. Now he has been allowed to leave the area for the first time, as his wife Annika Kärsten-Hoenig (39) reports. The aim, however, is to bring him home so that he is strong enough for an important operation that is still pending.
First trip out of the intensive care unit and big plans
“Since it was Heinz’s great wish to feel the sun, I asked him to grant this. Together with a nurse, we were allowed to go outside, which obviously made him happy.”
But that is apparently only the beginning, because the real goal is for the patient, who is still on artificial ventilation, to return to his own home. “This week, the first ‘attempt to stop the patient’s ventilation at night will be started. Depending on how things go, further steps will be planned. One of the goals is to remove the tracheostomy tube before he goes home,” says the wife of the artist, who was born on September 24, 1951 in Landsberg am Lech.
In her health update, however, she also makes it clear that the main goal is to get the weakened patient back on track for the major aortic operation. “My husband urgently needs his familiar surroundings in order to be able to breathe mentally and regain his strength,” says Kärsten-Hoenig.
Annika Kärsten-Hoenig: “Sons long for the closeness of their father”
But there is another important reason why she wants to bring him home: Juliano (3) and Jianni (1), the couple’s two young sons, “long to be close to their daddy,” she says, adding: “I want to make all of this possible for my beloved family and am preparing everything for it.”
Heinz Hoenig and Annika Kärsten-Hoenig have been married since 2019. Their two sons were born in 2020 and 2022. “Our boys are our everything. They are our motivation and the best reason to get through all this and never give up. And above all, they are the greatest gift that life could offer us,” she told the tabloid.
The trained nurse will also look after Heinz Hoenig at home and is confident she can handle the task. “Because, in addition to my medical expertise in the hospital, I support my husband every morning and evening with basic care, I have no fear.” She is currently submitting applications for the numerous necessary aids to the social insurance provider.
Annika Kärsten-Hoenig also gives an update on the costs of the treatment: “I think that by the time he is provisionally released, we can certainly be talking about half a million euros,” she says.
Video greeting from the hospital
Heinz Hoenig was taken to a Berlin hospital in critical condition at the beginning of May; he is currently awaiting life-saving surgery on his aorta.
The actor recently spoke out personally from his hospital bed. In a video published by RTL, the 72-year-old said: “Hello, fans, dear colleagues. I would like to sincerely thank you for helping me so much.” He is confident and grateful: “I’m still in the hospital, everything is being repaired. And I have a good wife who cares. And two small children who I want to get back to. Everything will be fine. I thank you.”
