Celebrities and politics go hand in hand in the US election campaign. After numerous star performances, singer Pink is now set to crown the finale of the DNC.
This Thursday evening (22 August) the US Democratic Party Convention in Chicago is coming to an end. Top stars are expected on stage again: Singer Pink (44) is set to perform as the headliner at the grand finale of the DNC, shortly before Kamala Harris (59) takes the stage and gives her speech in which she officially accepts the nomination as presidential candidate. Actress Kerry Washington (47) will lead the evening as moderator.
Numerous superstars support Democrats
Numerous (musical) superstars performed at the Democratic Party Convention on the first three evenings, publicly pledging their support for Harris in the presidential election in November. On Wednesday (August 21), talk show legend Oprah Winfrey (70) gave one of her many speeches. John Legend (45), Stevie Wonder (74), Sheila E. (66) and Maren Morris (34) also performed on stage, while actress Mindy Kaling (45) hosted the evening.
John Legend honors Prince at party convention
John Legend performed shortly before the speech by vice presidential candidate Tim Walz (60), who is currently the governor of Minnesota. He paid tribute to one of the state’s most famous artists: singer Prince (1958-2016). Together with Sheila E., Legend sang “Let’s Go Crazy” from Prince’s 1984 album “Purple Rain”.
Lil Jon performs for Georgia
On Tuesday, not only performances by JFK’s grandson Jack Schlossberg (31), former US President Barack Obama (63) and First Lady Michelle Obama (60) as well as Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff (59) caused excitement. Musical accompaniment was provided by the “Godmother of Soul” Patti LaBelle (80) and rapper Common (52). In addition, the individual delegates from the states announced their nominations for music of their choice. There was also a surprise appearance by rapper Lil Jon (53), who provided musical accompaniment for the state of Georgia with “Turn Down For What” and “Get Low”.
The first evening, however, marked the handover from Joe Biden (81) to Kamala Harris. In addition to the current US President, his wife Jill (73) and daughter Ashley (43) spoke. “Scandal” actor Tony Goldwyn (64) was the moderator, and the music acts on stage were country singer Mickey Guyton (41) and Grammy winner Jason Isbell (45).
