Scala: For the first time a woman conducts an opera

The Italian conductor Speranza Scappucci will be the first woman to conduct an opera at La Scala in Milan. The 48-year-old Roman will conduct Vincenzo Bellini’s opera “I Capuleti ei Montecchi” on January 18th. Scappucci steps in for the conductor Evelino Pidò, who is sick with the coronavirus.

Scappucci, who leads the Opéra Royale de Wallonie in Liège, was the first female conductor to lead the opening of the Vienna Opera Ball in 2017. In February she will conduct “Elisir d’amore” at the Berlin State Opera.

“I am very excited and feel very responsible for this sudden and unexpected commitment. I would like to thank Scala director Dominique Meyer and the entire theater, especially the orchestra, for the way they welcomed me and for that they wanted to carry out the production despite the difficulties, “said Scappucci.

The opera “I Capuleti ei Montecchi” has not been staged at La Scala since 1987. The director is Adrian Noble.
