In Germany’s pedestrian zones, some people are dressed as if they were on their way to the summit. This brings a mountaineering legend into action.
Mountaineering legend Reinhold Messner looks with some amusement at the trend towards outdoor clothing in Germany’s inner cities. “The people in the pedestrian zone are dressed as if they were going to climb Everest the next day,” the 79-year-old told the German Press Agency at his Juval Castle near Merano in South Tyrol. When asked whether he felt guilty because he himself may have contributed to the trend, he replied: “No, I don’t.”
Messner went on to say that he wears a lot of functional clothing himself – but for practical reasons, not for fashion reasons. The world’s most famous mountaineer will turn 80 next month. Messner was the first person to stand on the summit of all 14 eight-thousanders, including the highest mountain of all, Mount Everest. The Italian has an advertising contract with a company that sells outdoor clothing.
