Robert Downey Jr. returns to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as supervillain Doctor Doom. This is how he was convinced to make a comeback.
It was a sensation at the Comic-Con in San Diego in July: Robert Downey Jr. (59) is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Although he no longer plays the ex-Avenger Tony Stark aka Iron Man, he plays an opponent of the superhero team: Doctor Doom. In the interview, Robert Downey Jr. now explains how the comeback to the MCU came about.
According to the report, he and his wife Susan Downey met with Kevin Feige (51), the boss of the MCU, last year. He finally brought the topic to the table and explained: “I keep thinking about what it would be like if you came back …”
And that’s not all: “How do we manage not to move backwards? How do we not disappoint expectations? How do we continue to exceed expectations?” he asked further questions. Then the MCU mastermind brought Victor von Doom into play. In the Marvel Comics, the mad scientist is one of the Avengers’ most dazzling adversaries. “I looked at the character and was excited. Later he said to me: ‘Let’s do Victor von Doom properly.'” So the comeback was probably quickly decided.
Doctor Doom as the next supervillain in the MCU
Marvel wants to build Victor von Doom, aka Doctor Doom, into the next big antagonist of the Avengers. Kang, who was originally intended for this role, had to make way. His actor, Jonathan Mayors (34), was found guilty of domestic violence in 2023.
“Avengers 5” with the corresponding subtitle “Doomsday” is scheduled to hit German cinemas on April 29, 2026. “Avengers 6” will follow about a year later on May 5, 2027.
