The verdict against Melanie Müller in the “Hitler salute” trial has been passed. The sentence is higher than demanded by the public prosecutor.
The district court in Leipzig has passed judgment in the Hitler salute trial against party singer Melanie Müller (36). According to consistent media reports, the judge imposed a fine of 160 daily rates of 500 euros each on Müller on Friday (23 August) – a total of 80,000 euros. The judgment also includes a drug offense from last year, it is said.
The 36-year-old appeared in court in person for the verdict to be announced. However, this is not yet legally binding. According to reports, the court’s sentence went well beyond the prosecutor’s demand. The prosecutor only demanded 95 daily rates of 60 euros each (a total of 5,700 euros). Müller’s defense, however, had pleaded for acquittal in both cases.
These allegations are in the air
Melanie Müller is accused of having raised her arm several times in an unconstitutional and right-wing extremist gesture during an appearance in September 2022. She herself denies this and claims that she does not move “in a right-wing extremist environment”. In addition, she is accused of “having illegally possessed narcotics on a day in August 2023”, the senior public prosecutor responsible told her earlier this year.
Showing the right-wing extremist gesture is prohibited in Germany according to Section 86a of the Criminal Code and is punishable by a fine or a prison sentence of up to three years.
