Tim Burton has explained why he has no interest in making another superhero movie.
The 65-year-old director, who will release the long-awaited sequel to Beetlejuicestarring Michael Keaton and Jenna Ortegathis September, directed Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992) early in his career, but has not made a superhero movie since.
What Tim Burton Said About Directing a Superhero Movie Again
In a new interview with Variety , the filmmaker explained why he has no desire to return to the genre: “I see things from different points of view, so I would never say never to anything. But, right now, it’s not something that interests me.”
The director of Edward Scissorhands He added: “I was lucky because at that time the word ‘franchise’ didn’t exist. Batman seemed a bit experimental at the time… It deviated from what the perception might be [de una película de superhéroes]”.
Burton said he agreed to work on the 1992 Batman sequel, Batman Returns, because he felt “re-energized” by the film’s villains, Penguin (Danny DeVito) and Catwoman (Michelle Pfeiffer). However, early signs of studio interference quickly put him off the idea of making follow-up installments.
“That’s when we started hearing the word franchise,” he said. “And the studio started asking, ‘What is that black substance coming out of Penguin’s mouth? ’ That was the first time I got that cold air of franchise.”
In addition to Batman, Burton had also been in talks to make a Superman movie starring Nicolas Cage. While the film never came to fruition, The Flash made a reference to the project by featuring a CGI version of Cage as the Man of Steel.
Reflecting on the canned production, Burton said: “I’ve worked on a couple of movies that didn’t get made after working on them for years, and those are pretty traumatic. I just try to focus on the things that I feel deeply about and get rid of all the noise around them.”
Burton’s new Beetlejuice, in which they also return Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara to their original roles, will hit theaters on September 5.
