Evelin Matt helped to create one of the most popular shows on GDR television. Now the television producer has died. This has caused great sadness, and not only among her companions.
Evelin Matt, the co-creator of the popular GDR television show “Ein Kessel Buntes”, has died. She died at the age of 89, presenter Wolfgang Lippert told the German Press Agency, citing information from the family. “Super Illu” had previously reported on the matter. “Ein Kessel Buntes” was a major entertainment attraction on GDR television, and editor Matt was something like the mother of the show.
“I am very upset by Evelin Matt’s death,” Lippert told the dpa. Evelin Matt was a “very important person” for him. “She was my discoverer, boss, friend and my wise advisor for decades. I miss her very much!”
Lippert was one of the presenters of the show “Ein Kessel Buntes”, which was broadcast from 1972 to 1992, initially on GDR television, and from 1991 onwards on ARD. Artists from the West also appeared there. The presenters also included Dagmar Frederic and Helga Hahnemann, and then Karsten Speck on ARD.
Evelin Matt was the creator of popular shows
Evelin Matt brought the popular entertainment show with producer Günther Steinbacher, which was produced in the Friedrichstadtpalast in Berlin and other large venues, into people’s living rooms. According to the Berlin-Brandenburg Broadcasting Corporation (RBB), she was not only the co-inventor of “Kessel Buntes”, but also of the Lippert show “Glück muss man haben”, which was shown from 1985 to 1997, first on GDR television and later on MDR. According to the RBB, Matt also supervised shows by Carmen Nebel and Carolin Reiber.
On the 50th anniversary of the show in 2022, Matt revealed to the “Bild” newspaper that there had initially been considerable resistance to the show’s title. “We didn’t have color television at the time, the first four episodes were in black and white,” she said. Further details about her death were initially unknown.
Dagmar Frederic comments on death
Entertainer Speck appeared shocked by Matt’s death on Friday evening in the MDR talk show “Riverboat” and shed tears. “I loved her, she was incredible and she knew how to do television,” said Speck. “Evelin was my mentor and without her I wouldn’t have had this whole career.”
Dagmar Frederic expressed her sadness about Matt’s death on Facebook. She wrote in a comment under the “Super Illu” report: “All good thoughts – and I have many – go with her on her final journey.”
There is another spin-off of the show on Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk (MDR) under the title “Ein Kessel Buntes Spezial” – with Lippert as presenter.
