Mourning for Evelin Matt. The GDR television producer has died. Matt was considered a co-inventor of the Saturday evening show “Ein Kessel Buntes”.

TV producer Evelin Matt has died. The influential figure in GDR television died at the age of 89, as the magazine “SuperIllu” first reported. Matt was considered the co-inventor of the popular Saturday evening show “Ein Kessel Buntes” and promoted several TV careers in the former GDR. The cause of death is not mentioned in the post.

A defining figure in GDR television

Together with producer Günther Steinbacher, Matt brought “Ein Kessel Buntes” into the living rooms of GDR citizens. The show was broadcast from 1972 to December 1992, most recently nationwide on Das Erste. Artists from the West, such as the iconic group ABBA, also appeared in “Ein Kessel Buntes”. Matt discovered and promoted presenter Wolfgang Lippert (72), who later presented “Wetten, dass..?” on ZDF from 1992 to 1993. He described Matt as the “powerful ‘Kessel’ boss”.

She herself pushed through the show’s title despite initial resistance. “We didn’t have color television at the time, the first four episodes were in black and white,” revealed Matt on the show’s 50th anniversary in 2022. Former “Ein Kessel Buntes” presenter Dagmar Frederic (79) expressed her condolences under the “SuperIllu” Facebook post: “All good thoughts – and I have many – go with her on her final journey.”
