Tears of relief for reality TV actor Chris Töpperwien: The participant of “Goodbye Germany!” and “I’m a Celebrity – Get Me Out of Here!” was in court.
According to the verdict of an Austrian judge, Chris Töpperwien did not enrich himself illegally. The entrepreneur, known from reality TV formats such as “Goodbye Germany! – The Emigrants” and “I’m a Celebrity – Get Me Out of Here!”, was charged with breach of trust and embezzlement.
Töpperwien became known as a TV emigrant and currywurst truck operator in the USA with the nickname “Currywurstmann”. The public prosecutor’s office had accused the 50-year-old of, among other things, having paid for private purchases with company money as the then manager of an Austrian barbecue retailer and of having used employees for private purposes. He was also said to have embezzled goods such as knives, barbecue spices and coal.
Töpperwien is “megahappy”
“It is not a question of whether he always acted morally correctly or made accounting errors,” but of criminally relevant behavior, the judge explained, according to the Austrian news agency APA. Töpperwien could not be proven to have intended to cause harm or unlawful enrichment. In case of doubt, the decision will be made in favor of the defendant.
“I’m obviously super happy,” said Töpperwien about the acquittal. Justice had prevailed, he said. The businessman left the courtroom in tears. “It was the worst situation of my entire life and I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy,” he said. “It was a nightmare for me and now it’s finally over.” The acquittal is not yet legally binding.
