After the fatal shooting on the set of “Rust”: Quentin Tarantino blames Alec Baldwin at least partly.
A court has dropped the case against Alec Baldwin (66) for possible complicity in the fatal shooting on the set of “Rust”. But Quentin Tarantino (61) does not want to absolve the actor of responsibility so easily. The cult director was a guest (68). The conversation also turned to the “Rust” accident, in which a shot from a gun held by Baldwin killed camerawoman Halyna Hutchins (1979-2021).
Bill Maher thinks the fact that Alec Baldwin had to stand trial is “nonsense.” Quentin Tarantino partly agrees. “The gunsmith is 90 percent responsible for everything that happens with the gun.” But: “The actor is 10 percent responsible.” After all, it is a potentially deadly weapon. “To a certain extent, you are partners in responsibility,” emphasized the director, whose films feature firearms on a large scale.
Tarantino opposes assessment of actors’ union
With this, Quentin Tarantino is taking a stand against the actors’ union SAG-AFTRA. In a statement, the union estimated the actors’ guilt in such cases at zero percent. “The job of an actor is not to be a firearms or weapons expert,” the statement from January 2024 said. And further: “Firearms are provided for use on set under the guidance of several experts who are directly responsible for the safe and correct handling of the weapon.”
The gunsmith in “Rust”, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, was sentenced to 18 months in prison for negligent homicide. The judge in charge surprisingly discontinued the trial against Alec Baldwin in July 2024. However, this was only due to a procedural error. The prosecution had withheld evidence from Alec Baldwin’s lawyers.
After his case was dropped, Alec Baldwin can no longer be prosecuted in a criminal case. However, Halyna Hutchins’ family wants to take the actor to court in a civil case.
