Eriksson’s last words to Beckham: “It will be okay”

Eriksson had appointed Beckham as captain of the team in 2001 after he was elected. He now writes: “I will be eternally grateful that you made me your captain, but I will keep these last memories of this day with you and your family forever… Thank you Sven, and to say it in your last words to me: ‘It will be okay’.”

Eriksson announced in January that he had been diagnosed with cancer and that he had a year to live at best. The Swede himself had already spoken about the meeting with Beckham in an interview in June. He told the Swedish newspaper that his former captain had visited him with a chef and a case of expensive wine. The bottles were from important years of the coach’s life, including one from the year he was born in 1948 and one from 1982, when Eriksson won the UEFA Cup with IFK Göteborg. Eriksson also raved about Beckham: “He is authentic. He could have been a great diva, but he is exactly the opposite.”

Prince William also bows

Beckham is not alone in his recognition of the Swedish coach. Numerous clubs that Sven-Göran Eriksson worked for paid tribute to their former coach on social media following the news of his death. Prince William (42) also paid tribute to the deceased. “I met him several times as England’s national coach and was always impressed by his charisma and passion for football.” “My thoughts are with his family and friends. A true gentleman of football,” the heir to the throne, who is president of the English Football Association (FA), continued.
