The director, widely known as one of the leading lights of the New German Cinema movement, has received awards at the Cannes, Venice and Berlin film festivals over the years, as well as a BAFTA award and three Oscar nominations.


Among his acclaimed films are the Road Movie trilogy, composed of Alice in the Cities (1974), The Wrong Move (1975) and Kings of the Road (1976); Paris, Texas (1984), which earned him a BAFTA Award for Best Director and the Palme d’Or at Cannes; Wings of Desire (1987), for which he won the Best Director Award at Cannes; and his most recent film, Perfect Dayswhich was nominated for an Oscar for best international film.
He served as President of the European Film Academy from 1996 to 2020 and received the Golden Bear for Lifetime Achievement at the Berlin Film Festival in 2015.

Wenders will be a guest of honour at the European Film Awards, which will be held on 7 December in Lucerne, Switzerland..
