How to clean mud from clothes
- Check the label attached to your garment: First of all, make sure that your garment is not delicate or requires dry cleaning only.
- Let the mud stain dry: Although it may seem strange, mud stains are easier to remove once they are dry. If you try to wash them while they are wet, you will actually end up impregnating them further into the fibers.
- Remove as much dried mud from the fabric as possible.: If the mud is dry, you should be able to remove it bit by bit. You can use a dull knife or spoon to gently scrape it off, or you can use a dry toothbrush or other stiff-bristled brush. A vacuum cleaner may work if you use the right attachment to make sure the fabric isn’t damaged.
- Soak the stained fabric with liquid laundry soap and scrub: Scrub until the soap penetrates the stain and let it sit for 15 minutes or more.
- Use a wet toothbrush: At this stage, the key is not to wet the entire garment because the mud will dissolve and penetrate the fibers. The best thing you can do is to wet a toothbrush and use a few drops of water to scrub with the soap.
- Wash the garment in a normal cycle in the washing machine.: When you see that the stain has lifted significantly, put the garment in the washing machine with a normal wash cycle. Wash the stained garment separately from the rest of the laundry.
- Do not put the garment in the dryer: If the stain is still there, repeat steps 4-6 until it is completely gone. Allow the garment to air dry. Drying sets mud stains.
