The horror comedy “Beetlejuice” with Michael Keaton as the poltergeist is considered a cult film today. Why, its creator Tim Burton is not entirely sure.
The American director Tim Burton said he was surprised by the success of his cult horror comedy “Beetlejuice”. “The funny thing about “Beetlejuice” is that, as much as I love the film, I never really understood why it was a success,” said the 66-year-old at the Venice Film Festival.
In the absurd horror comedy from 1988, Hollywood star Michael Keaton embodies the poltergeist Beetlejuice with black eye bags and messy hair. Beetlejuice became an iconic figure in pop culture. “It’s so rare to be involved in something that you can say is 100 percent original and unique,” said Keaton (72).
The sequel to the film, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” opens the 81st Venice Film Festival tonight. In addition to Keaton, Hollywood stars Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara are also back. Jenna Ortega (“Wednesday”) plays Lydia’s daughter, and Monica Bellucci and Willem Dafoe also star.
Lydia Deetz (Ryder), who was already haunted by Beetlejuice in the first part, is still haunted by him 30 years later. After a family tragedy, three generations of the Deetz family return to the house where it all began – and new misfortune is not long in coming.
