Venice Film Festival: Leonie Benesch: My news consumption is “addictive”

She became famous with roles in “The White Ribbon” and most recently “The Teachers’ Room”. Leonie Benesch can now be seen in the thriller “September 5”, which deals with the responsibility of the media.

For actress Leonie Benesch, daily consumption of news is part of her everyday life. “I do think that sometimes it would be better for me not to consume news as the last thing before I go to sleep and the first thing in the morning,” the 33-year-old told the dpa in Venice. “But at the same time, I somehow like having the feeling of knowing what’s going on.”

“Because I don’t use social media, I always reach for my phone because of the news, and I would say that’s addictive,” said Benesch. She has always resolved to reduce her news consumption a little, but in the end she never followed through. “Because I think you just have to be stricter than saying: ‘Oh, I’ll just do it a little less.’ It doesn’t work because it’s still a habit.”

Benesch plays a leading role in Tim Fehlbaum’s film “September 5”. The thriller tells the story of the 1972 Olympic attack in Munich, when Palestinian terrorists took Israeli athletes hostage and ultimately murdered them.

The film, which premieres on Tuesday at the Venice Film Festival, is set entirely in the TV studio of the US broadcaster ABC Sports, which was set up right next to the Olympic Village. Despite resistance from the company’s own news department, the television team reported live on the events.
