Until December, Crown Prince Christian will be swapping his Scandinavian homeland for East Africa. His stay there is in keeping with the tradition of the royal family.
An heir to the throne following in the footsteps of the great Danish writer Karen Blixen: Denmark’s Crown Prince Christian (18) will be living in East Africa in the coming months. There he will get to know the daily business on two farms and gain insights into local nature conservation, as the Danish royal family announced. The trip starts next Wednesday – the prince is not scheduled to return to Denmark until December. The Danish court did not reveal in which East African country or countries the stay will take place.
In the Danish royal family, it is a tradition that heirs to the throne gain longer experience abroad at a young age. Christian’s father, King Frederik X (56), for example, took part in an expedition to Mongolia in 1986 and worked for a year on a winery in California in 1989. Christian himself had completed his A-levels at a high school north of Copenhagen that summer and hinted that he wanted to “see the world” after the summer holidays.
At the beginning of the week, the Danish government presented a comprehensive Africa strategy with which it hopes to find new partners on the African continent on a variety of issues. According to information from the royal family, however, Christian’s trip will be a private visit from start to finish – so there is unlikely to be any connection with the government’s strategy.
Denmark’s greatest connection to Africa is probably the story of Karen Blixen (1885-1962, German pseudonym: Tania Blixen). The author wrote about her years as a coffee farmer in Kenya in her autobiographical novel “Africa – a dark, alluring world”, which was later made into a film under the title “Out of Africa” with Hollywood stars Meryl Streep and Robert Redford in the leading roles. In the Kenyan capital Nairobi, the suburb of Karen is named after her.
