George RR Martin (75) has had a difficult year so far. This is what the author of the “Game of Thrones” script writes. In the new article, he reports on the tradition of the Zozobra, which is a puppet around 15 meters tall that is burned every year in September for spiritual purification at a festival in Santa Fe. The ritual is intended to drive away “misfortune and sadness, depression and despair of the past year,” writes Martin. “And believe me, we need that more than ever.”
Martin had “stress, anger, conflicts and defeats”
Martin sees the reasons for this in politics on the one hand: “This was not a good year for anyone, with war everywhere and fascism on the rise…” But on a personal level it was also “a pretty miserable year,” writes the author. “One full of stress, anger, conflict and defeat.”
Martin further announces that he will have to talk about some of it. Apparently, the “Game of Thrones” prequel “House of the Dragon” will also be discussed: “I’m not looking forward to the other posts I have to write about everything that went wrong with ‘House of the Dragon’… but I have to do that too, and I will do it. But not today.”
Like “Game of Thrones”, the series is based on George RR Martin’s books, this time on the 2018 novel “Fire and Blood”. The author also acts as co-creator and executive producer. It is not known exactly how much influence and decision-making power Martin has on the series.
Praise and criticism from Martin for “House of the Dragon”
Martin had already commented on the series in his blog during the broadcast of the second season, but not only negatively. In a post from July, he praised the makers for a computer-animated scene in the fourth episode – in his opinion, there could not be a better dragon fight scene. On the other hand, he criticized the series for the depiction of a coat of arms on which the dragons have four legs instead of two.
