The eldest daughter of the Norwegian royal couple and her fiancé from the USA are getting married. They have chosen a place with a picturesque view for the wedding.
A princess marries a shaman: The Norwegian royal daughter Märtha Louise (52) and her American fiancé Durek Verrett (49) want to tie the knot today. The daughter of King Harald V and Verrett want to say “I do” on the picturesque Geirangerfjord. Verrett says he is a shaman in the sixth generation of his family. He wants to help people find their true strength in a spiritual way.
After a welcome party in nearby Ålesund, a boat trip through the fjord and another pre-wedding party in the town of Geiranger in the days before, the wedding celebrations are set to reach their climax in the afternoon. According to the program published by the newspaper “Verdens Gang”, the wedding ceremony is set to take place at 1 p.m. in a tent in an open space next to a hotel, where the wedding reception will also be held later.
The bride and groom will be married by the pastor Margit Lovise Holte, a long-time friend of Märtha Louise. The gala dinner starts at 6:30 p.m., the bridal dance is scheduled for 10:45 p.m. – after that the big party begins.
Prince Sverre Magnus with girl at his side
Among the approximately 350 invited wedding guests will be King Harald and his wife Queen Sonja (both 87), as well as Märtha Louise’s younger brother Crown Prince Haakon and his wife Crown Princess Mette-Marit (both 51). Haakon and Mette-Marit’s children Princess Ingrid Alexandra (20) and Prince Sverre Magnus (18) will also be there – Sverre Magnus was already seen in Ålesund smiling and holding hands with a girl of about his age at his side.
Among those travelling from abroad are the Swedish heir to the throne, Crown Princess Victoria, with her husband Prince Daniel, as well as her brother Prince Carl Philip and his wife Princess Sofia. It is not known whether representatives of other royal families will be present in Geiranger.
Second wedding for Märtha Louise
Märtha Louise is number four in line to the Norwegian throne. She was previously married to the writer Ari Behn (1972-2019) from 2002 to 2017. She has three daughters from this marriage.
In 2019, the princess made her relationship with Verrett public. Since then, there have been repeated controversies surrounding the couple, especially the use of Märtha Louise’s princess title for business purposes, which she actually no longer wanted to use commercially. This was decided in 2019, and in 2022 the princess finally resigned from all official duties for the royal family in order to more clearly separate her role at court and her business activities.
The wedding preparations were also accompanied by controversy. First there was trouble over the marketing of a specially produced wedding gin, then over a controversial exclusive contract with the British celebrity magazine “Hello!”: Contrary to all conventions, the bride and groom gave the magazine exclusive image rights to the wedding ceremony and reception for an unknown sum, which means that access for local media will be severely restricted. A Netflix team will also be filming on site for a documentary.
