Drew Barrymore: Today she thinks differently about the “Playboy” cover

Drew Barrymore (49) has shared her thoughts on digitalization and smartphones and how to deal with them in relation to her children with her followers. She also looks back on her own youth and younger years, in which she had “unorthodox” experiences in the “adult world”.

“I experienced many hedonistic scenarios at parties and even in my own house that caused me great shame,” reveals Barrymore, who grew up in an acting dynasty and became a worldwide child star thanks to her role in the Spielberg classic “ET – The Extra-Terrestrial”. “We as children were not supposed to see these images.” She herself was also promiscuous. “I saw it as art and to this day I don’t condemn it.” Barrymore also looks back at her “Playboy” cover from 1995. “When I had an innocent artistic moment in Playboy in my early 20s, I thought it would be a magazine that probably wouldn’t reappear because it was made of paper. I didn’t know that the Internet would come along one day. I didn’t know so many things.”

No smartphones for your children

Her unusual life included becoming emancipated and moving into her first apartment at 14, which made her feel like she was “starting my life over on my own terms.” But she also found that “there was no one to look out for me,” Barrymore explains. “My own mother was reprimanded for letting me get so out of control. I have so much compassion for her now because I’m a mother. And none of us are perfect.”

She continues: “As a child, I often wished that someone would tell me ‘no’, I wanted so badly to rebel because I had no boundaries,” reflects Barrymore, who wrote about the dark side of success in her autobiography “Little Girl Lost”. “I had too much access and too much abundance, and at some point the ‘no’ actually became a challenge. Children today should not be exposed to so much.” As a mother, she now wants to protect her two daughters “the way I wanted to be protected.” She never imagined in her wildest dreams that children would one day be in the same boat and have so much access to modern technology and social media. This is the reason why she is not yet ready for her daughters Olive (12) and Frankie (10) to have their own smartphones.

Her two children know all about Barrymore’s “Playboy” shoot, “thanks” to the Internet and even without a smartphone, as the presenter revealed in her own show. Olive used her mother’s cover as an argument in a midriff-baring debate. “My daughter wants to wear a crop top. I say no and she says: ‘You were on the cover of Playboy,'” Barrymore said in a conversation with Christina Aguilera (43).
