The franchise Rocky is expanding even further with a new prequel series in development by franchise star, Sylvester StalloneThis is a project that will focus on Rocky Balboa himself years before he began his legendary boxing career.

Stallone first teased the project a while back, revealing that he was laying the groundwork for the story and now, the actor has made solid progress as he recently shared an update that teases some exciting plot points.

The actor recently sat down to chat on the Inspire Me podcast, where he said he had written a few pages for the story. Without giving too much away, Stallone hinted that Balboa’s backstory could go in a lot of interesting directions. The writing process has been a smooth one for the actor, who drew comparisons of what he’s written so far to the 1995 animated musical romance, Lady and the Trampbut with human characters instead of adorable puppies.

It’s shaping up to be unlike anything else we’ve seen in the franchise, as the project will propel us back to when a teenage Rocky met and fell in love with his fellow adventurer, Adriana, who is played in the original film by the Oscar-nominated actress Talia Shire.

Stallone said: “The Rocky prequel is very dear to me. I wrote a few pages and it seems to write itself. Seeing Adrienne at 15, Rocky at 17, and Paulie moving to a new neighborhood, Rocky is the bad boy.“It’s almost like Lady and the Tramp, but with real people. It’s going to be wonderful.”

Where to watch the “Rocky” prequel series

Back in 2021, when he first shared that he was working on the project, Stallone revealed that the series will be set in the 1960s and will likely explore key transformative events of the time, including the moon landing, the feminist movement, the Civil Rights Movement, and the Cold War. The Rocky franchise is the most beloved, and the Creed spin-off expands the fanbase with a new generation of audiences. The films have dominated the box office, and it will be quite a feat to see that success translated to the small screen.

Stallone plans to adapt the story for broadcast in multiple seasons, each consisting of 10 episodes. The format is set up this way to allow each character time to develop, as Stallone wants to tell a multi-layered story. So far, no streaming platform has signed on to the project.
