It is a farce that the beach handball association has instigated: At the European beach handball championship in Varna, Bulgaria, the women of the Norwegian team wore trousers that did not comply with the regulations. The association prescribes tight bikini panties. The Norwegians wore short shorts when they played for third place. Thereupon the European handball federation imposed a fine of 1500 euros. A prominent singer now pays her.
At the weekend, the American Pink joined the discussion and agreed to support the Norwegians. “I am very proud of the Norwegian beach handball players who protest against the very sexist rules on their ‘uniform’,” wrote the 41-year-old on Twitter. She agreed to take the 1500 euro fine.
At the same time, Pink sharply criticized the association and the rules of the IHF. “The European handball federation should have to pay a fine for sexism”, snubbed the singer. The rules stipulate that the trousers of the women’s teams may only have a waistband width of “a maximum of ten centimeters”. The regulation is controversial, as tight-fitting longer pants would not hinder the game. The bikini bottoms are a relic from reactionary times, but the IHF is sticking to them.
Norwegians oppose association
The Norwegians had submitted an application to be allowed to compete with longer pants. The officials refused. The team then decided at short notice to still wear longer pants and to accept the conflict with the association. The change to the slightly longer pants was a “spontaneous action”, national player Katinka Haltvik reported on Norwegian television NRK:
