Diane Kruger: Quentin Tarantino doubted her

Diane Kruger has revealed that Quentin Tarantino didn’t want to cast her for “Inglourious Basterds”: “He didn’t believe in me.”

Diane Kruger (45) spoke in an interview about the initial skepticism of Quentin Tarantino (58) regarding her cast in “Inglourious Basterds” (2009). She said, “He didn’t want to audition because he saw a movie I was in and didn’t like. So he didn’t believe in me from the start.” The only reason why he let her audition was because “there was no one else left to audition”.

Casting with hardships

The casting then became a challenge for Kruger. “I had to pay for my flight from New York to Germany myself because he didn’t want to see me in the US,” she said. “I had to overcome all these obstacles, but I thought to myself: He can do me. I’ll just do it and prove to him that I can do it. And luckily everything worked out.” Kruger believes that Tarantino also learned from this experience: “It must have been an apprenticeship for him. Sometimes you put people in pigeon holes and misjudge them.”

Quentin Tarantino’s film “Inglourious Basterds” grossed over $ 300 million worldwide and was nominated for eight Academy Awards in 2010. Kruger played the German actress and spy Bridget von Hammersmark. The star-studded cast also included Brad Pitt (58), Christoph Waltz (65), Daniel Brühl (43) and Michael Fassbender (44).
