Venice Film Festival: Kevin Costner on the failure of his western “Horizon”

After a postponed release, part two of Kevin Costner’s ambitious western project will premiere in Venice. There, Costner will comment on the lack of success.

Kevin Costner has commented on the lack of success of his ambitious western project “Horizon”. The first part did not meet expectations at the US box office, which is why the release of part two was postponed there. “It was not an overwhelming success,” said the 69-year-old in Venice.

“But I’ve had many films that have stood the test of time. Anyway, it was a studio decision to release the film six weeks later, and then it became a studio decision not to release it.”

Costner has been pursuing the “Horizon” project for a long time, but was unable to find sponsors. Now he has financed it with his own money. The epic will consist of four parts and be 12 hours long. The film tells the story of the settlement of the American West during the Civil War (1861 to 1865).

This is what the second part of “Horizon” is about

Part two – “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2” – premieres at the Venice Film Festival. Again, the focus is on the white Americans who occupy the Apache territories on their journey west.

While many different storylines were opened up in part one, some of them are now brought together. Settlers who have travelled different paths meet each other. The stories of various protagonists are expanded upon.

Cinema release on 7 November

Such as Costner, who plays the taciturn cowboy Hayes Ellison, and Sienna Miller. She plays a pioneer named Frances Kittredge, who followed her husband to the “Horizon Settlement” and has to raise her children alone after a brutal attack.

She gets support from the other settlers – and also from Lieutenant Trent Gephart (Sam Worthington), for whom Frances has special feelings. The second part of the Western saga will be released in Germany on November 7th.

About the remaining chapters, Costner said in Venice: “They are all written. I have to hurry so that the rock does not fall downhill again. I have to stop it and push it up. It is a rope that I must not let go of. I do not know at the moment how I will realize part three, but I will manage it.”
