Angela Bassett: First Emmy for the actress

Angela Bassett: First Emmy for the actress

After her ninth nomination in around 22 years, actress Angela Bassett has finally received her first Emmy.

“Black Panther” star Angela Bassett (66) has been awarded an Emmy around 22 years after her first nomination. As part of the Creative Arts Emmys, the US actress received a trophy for best narrator for the documentary series “Queens”. The series is about the “queens of the animal kingdom” and can be seen on the streaming service Disney+.

Angela Bassett: An Emmy “for all the hard work”

“It feels good – really, really good,” Angela Bassett said in her acceptance speech on the first night of the Creative Arts Emmys. “We don’t work for it, but we get [diese Auszeichnungen] for all the hard work we do,” she later explained in the press room.

This was Bassett’s ninth Emmy nomination. She was first nominated for Best Actress in 2002 for “The Rosa Parks Story.” Over the years, she has received nominations for supporting roles in the series “American Horror Story,” for guest appearances, and for other engagements as a narrator.

Angela Bassett’s Honorary Oscar

The actress has received numerous other awards in her long career. There were Oscar nominations for the Tina Turner biopic “Tina – What’s Love Got to Do with it” (1993) and her role in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” (2022), but she came away empty-handed both times. At the beginning of 2024, Bassett was finally given a golden boy at the Governors Awards. Alongside comedian and actor Mel Brooks (98), among others, she received the honorary Oscar, which is awarded for the lifetime achievement of filmmakers, outstanding services to film or services to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The Creative Arts Emmys, which are usually awarded before the big Primetime Emmy Awards – this year on September 15th – mostly honor people behind the scenes.

Other award winners at the first of two ceremonies, which will not be broadcast live on TV, include the TV special “Dick Van Dyke 98 Years of Magic”. Dick Van Dyke (98) is now tied with Norman Lear (1922-2023) as the oldest Emmy winner. The Netflix documentary series “Beckham” was also named best documentary.
