British Royals: Second anniversary on the throne: cannon salute for Charles

The second year since his accession to the throne was a particularly challenging one for the British monarch. However, he is already planning another big trip in the autumn.

The second anniversary of the accession to the throne of British King Charles III was celebrated on Monday with cannon salvos. Shots thundered in London’s Hyde Park and other locations.

The event actually took place the day before, the second anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s death – but traditionally no gun salutes are fired on Sundays. Charles (75) automatically succeeded his mother on the throne when she died.

He and his wife, Queen Camilla (77), spent the anniversary of the long-time monarch’s death at Balmoral Castle in the Scottish Highlands. Elizabeth died there on September 8, 2022 at the age of 96.

In autumn, the royal couple plans to visit Australia and Samoa

The second year since his accession to the throne was particularly challenging for Charles. In February it was announced that he had cancer. Just weeks later, his daughter-in-law Kate also made a cancer diagnosis public.

Charles has now largely resumed his public duties. In the autumn, the royal couple plans to travel to Australia and Samoa for an official visit.
