Luke Mockridge tried to explain his jokes about dwarfs and referred to Mathias Mester, with whom he had worked. Now Mester is taking a stand.
The damage to Luke Mockridge is getting bigger and bigger. To explain his impossible jokes about para-athletes at the Paralympic Games, which he made in the podcast “Die Deutschen”, he posted a clip of one of his stage performances. In the video, Mockridge can be seen making jokes about people of short stature. To justify these jokes, Mockridge explains on stage that he worked with Mathias Mester. The former athlete is himself of short stature and has taken part in the Paralympic Games several times.
Luke Mockridge: Mathias Mester takes a stand
“I wrote the last few jokes with a friend of mine. His name is Mathias Mester and he’s a short Paralympic athlete,” says Mockridge. “We had a great conversation – not necessarily on equal terms,” he jokes in his stage program. But was it really like that? On Instagram, Mathias Mester now tells a different version of the story. “I’ve received a lot of messages about this and I want to make it clear here: I didn’t work with Luke Mockridge on his program,” he writes.
“Luke asked me about jokes about dwarfs last year and asked me what I thought of them. He sent me the jokes, I thought they were funny, and I told him so,” said Mester.
Statements about Paralympics
Celebrities against Luke Mockridge: “You’re just a poor little sausage!”
But that had nothing to do with the jokes that Mockridge made in the podcast “Die Deutschen”. “I have nothing to do with the discriminatory statements regarding the Paralympics. I find them tasteless and over the top,” said Mester on Instagram. The statements in the podcast were something “completely different” than the jokes he heard from Mockridge “and in my eyes have nothing to do with humor,” said Mester.
Mester joins other celebrities who have harshly criticized Mockridge for his jokes about people with disabilities. The former competitive athlete Kristina Vogel, who is herself paraplegic, was the first to get the ball rolling. “Attention and advance warning for the question of why people talk their heads off, because there are still people who say such inhumane crap and just put down disabled people! Here’s just one example… it’s unbelievable!” she wrote on Instagram after seeing the scenes from the podcast herself. She then launched a petition addressed to Sat.1, demanding that the broadcaster end its collaboration with Mockridge. This has now happened.
