Luke Mockridge: Report filed for insult and hate speech

Following Luke Mockridge’s discriminatory comments against disabled people, there are now consequences. A member of the Bremen Disabled Sports Association has filed a complaint.

No more fun – says Frank Schurgast, and he is taking action. The second chairman of the Bremen Disabled Sports Association is following up on the outrage at the weekend over comedian Luke Mockridge’s anti-disabled comments. He is reporting him.

Last weekend, Kristina Vogel, Olympic champion in track cycling, brought a video clip to social media that had been published three weeks ago but had not yet received much attention. In the clip, comedian Luke Mockridge can be seen as a guest on the podcast “Die Deutschen” and, together with hosts Nizar and Shayan, making fun of the Paralympics and disabled people in a very discriminatory and malicious way.

Thanks to Vogel, the clip went viral and attracted a lot of media attention. The outrage over the comments spread like wildfire. There is a technical term for insulting and discriminating against disabled people: ableism. The definition is: unjustified unequal treatment (“discrimination”) due to a physical or mental impairment or due to learning difficulties.

Frank Schurgast accuses Luke Mockridge of several offenses

An accusation that Schurgast sees very clearly. In a post on Facebook, Schurgast writes that, in his opinion, Luke Mockridge fulfills the criteria for inflammatory insults and their dissemination as well as hate speech and its dissemination. “That is why a criminal complaint is the right reaction for me. For me personally, who also belongs to the marginalized group of people with disabilities, it is unacceptable that it should be dismissed with just an outcry of outrage,” says Schurgast.

In addition to being the second chairman of the Bremen Disabled Sports Association, Frank Schurgast also holds other positions. These include co-chairman of the Inklusion Nord association, he is a member of the main board of the German Disabled Sports Association, deputy regional chairman of the AG Selbst Aktiv Bremen, which represents people with disabilities in the SPD, and inclusion officer for the SPD Bremen-Nord.

Schurgast has also reported the two creators of the podcast. After the turbulent weekend, he sees a clear need for action: outrage must be followed by a very clear ‘No – not like that!'”
