Incarcerated Harvey Weinstein: Emergency heart surgery

Convicted former film producer Harvey Weinstein has been taken to hospital for emergency heart surgery.

The fallen former film mogul Harvey Weinstein (72) has been taken from prison in New York to a hospital for emergency heart surgery. “Mr. Weinstein was admitted to Bellevue Hospital last night for various complaints,” two spokespeople for Weinstein said in a statement made available to the broadcaster. On Monday (September 9), “a procedure and an operation” were performed on the 72-year-old’s heart. No information was given about the result of the procedure.

Harvey Weinstein faces court again in November

In 2020, Weinstein was sentenced to 23 years in prison in New York for rape and sexual assault. His lawyers have been complaining about their client’s health problems for years. In July of this year, the former producer contracted an acute infection with the coronavirus and double pneumonia. He was also treated for chest pains in 2020. At that time, a blocked artery was also opened at Bellevue Hospital in New York.

In addition, Weinstein is said to suffer from various chronic illnesses such as diabetes, high blood pressure, spinal stenosis and fluid in the heart and lungs. “Mr. Weinstein suffers from a multitude of serious health problems that require ongoing treatment,” his spokesperson’s statement continued.

Weinstein’s conviction in New York State was overturned in April 2024 due to procedural errors. However, he remains in custody after being sentenced to 16 years in prison in California in 2022. In November, Weinstein will be back in court in New York for the retrial of his rape case.

Next week, Weinstein is also due to appear in court in New York. A grand jury is expected to be presented with new evidence against him. The prosecution is seeking further, new charges of sex crimes.

The Weinstein case was one of the triggers of the #MeToo movement. Since the fall of 2017, more than 100 people have made allegations of rape and misconduct against Weinstein, dating back to the 1970s. Weinstein himself has always maintained his innocence and denied having raped or sexually abused anyone.

As co-founder of the film production company Miramax, Weinstein was behind timeless film classics such as the historical comedy “Shakespeare in Love”, which won seven Oscars, or Quentin Tarantino’s (61) “Pulp Fiction”.
