Are The Goonies Coming Back?
Now The Sun reports that there are plans to begin discussing ideas for the sequel, with a release date of 2026 or 2027, while its main stars are likely to return.
There has been talk of a sequel for several years, and the screenwriter Chris Columbus revealed in 2021 that the late original director, Richard Donneronce spoke to him about a possible follow-up film.
“He called me and said, ‘You know what we should do? We’ll get on my boat, smoke weed for three days and come up with an idea for ‘Goonies 2,'” he recalled to Empire.
“I told Dick, ‘Well, first of all, I don’t smoke marijuana. But maybe if I go, we’ll have a couple drinks together and sit on the boat. ’ It never happened. And I regret that. Because I would drop everything to do that right now.”
In 2020, Steven Spielbergwho wrote the original Goonies story, spoke at a cast reunion about why a sequel never happened.
“Chris, Dick and I –and Lauren [Shuler Donner]– We have had many conversations about this topic,” he said. “Every two years we come up with an idea, but then it doesn’t hold up”.
“The problem is that the bar is set very high in this genre. I don’t think we’ve been able to come up with a better idea than The Goonies that we all did in the ’80s.”
